A crisis of female confidence seems to be threatening the Glasgow heat of Babycham's nationwide Funnywomen stand-up competition.

Native comic Janey Godley is worried by a shortage of entrants for the event she's due to compere at Blackfriars, Bell Street, next month. Janey blames female reserve, as she's sure Glasgow has plenty of comical women.

Indeed, two old dears queueing in Shettleston Post Office recently made Janey laugh. "Old Tam wi' the wan eye," one woman stated, adding: "That's him lost the other." After the merest pause, she continued: "I've got his telly."
